Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Ferris State doubled up on Lake Superior
State at the free-throw line to win 64-58 during Thursday's men's
basketball game at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (8-5 overall, 5-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) were 9-of-20 at the free-throw line during the
first half and 23-of-44 for the game. The Lakers (6-6 overall, 1-4
GLIAC) were 2-of-7 during the first half, which they led 31-25, and
11-of-19 for the game.
FSU, which totaled only seven first-half field
goals, steadily chipped away at an early 14-point deficit and
claimed a 39-37 lead following an 11-0 run during the first eight
minutes of the second half. The game was back-and-forth the rest of
the way, but three-pointers by Bulldogs Jerell Sanders at 4:25 and
Kenny Brown at 00:46 killed the Lakers' momentum.
Brown's final three-pointer -- his fourth of the game
-- gave FSU a 61-58 lead. LSSU's Derek Billing unsuccessfully
tried to answer, and teammate Derek Kinney missed a good scoring
chance in traffic underneath after grabbing the offensive rebound.
Hunt also missed a desperation three-point attempt with 18 seconds
to go, forcing the Lakers to foul down the stretch.
Hunt led LSSU with 21 points, and Billing finished with 11. LSSU
shot 42.6 percent from the field, including 7-of-19 from
three-point range.
Sanders finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to follow
Brown in scoring for FSU. Daniel Sutherlin totaled 13 points and 12
rebounds. Ferris State shot 42.9 percent from the field, including
5-of-15 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Lakers,
37-31.
LSSU plays host to Grand Valley State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
