SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State opened its 2012-13
hockey season with a home exhibition game Saturday at the Taffy
Abel Arena. The Lakers defeated the Ryerson Rams, 2-1. The Lakers
will face Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Michigan Tech in
non-conference play October 11 at home.
After a scoreless first period, the Lakers took a 1-0 lead at
the 14:00 mark with a goal from sophomore forward Chris Ciotti.
Junior defenseman Zach Sternberg tallied the lone assist on
Ciotti's goal.
The Rams tied the game with a power-play goal at 15:50 of the
second. Andrew Buck notched the goal from Kent McPherson and Jason
McDonough.
At 12:21 of the third, junior forward Dan Radke tallied the
game-winning goal for LSSU. Senior forward Domenic Monardo and
freshman forward Austin McKay assisted.
Ryerson's goaltending staff stopped a total of 27 shots. Junior
netminder Kevin Kapalka made 26 saves for the Lakers. LSSU was
0-for-5 on the power-play and held Ryerson to 1-for-4.
