SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State opens
regular-season play with a home-and-home series against Michigan
Tech of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. LSSU will host
the Huskies at 7:35 p.m. Thursday at Taffy Abel Arena.
The Lakers and Huskies last played at the Taffy Abel Arena
during the 2010 Superior Cup when MTU defeated LSSU, 6-2.
Michigan Tech played a role in LSSU's earliest era of hockey,
and the teams met regularly from 1969 through 1999. After a
seven-year hiatus, the teams resumed their rivalry and met four
times in the Superior Cup. LSSU was 1-3 against the Huskies between
October 2007, and October, 2010.
Overall the MTU leads the all-time record 32-18-4. At home Lake
State is 8-8-2 while on the road the Lakers are 9-24-2.
Beginning in 2013-14, the Lakers and Huskies will help usher in
another new era for the WCHA when, for the second time in the
history of college hockey, Upper Peninsula rivals LSSU, MTU, and
Northern Michigan will be members of the same conference.
Previously, the three U.P. schools were all members of the Central
Collegiate Hockey Association for three seasons: 1981-82, 1982-83,
and 1983-84. MTU and NMU left the CCHA to join the WCHA in 1984,
and NMU returned to the CCHA in 1997.
The Lakers head into this weekend's series with an exhibition
win under their belts. LSSU defeated Ryerson University 2-1 Oct. 6.
Sophomore forward Chris Ciotti tallied a goal from junior defender
Zach Sternberg. LSSU's game-winning goal came from junior forward
Dan Radke and was assisted by senior forward Domenic Monardo and
freshman forward Austin McKay.
The Huskies are coming off a 6-2 exhibition win over Brock.
MTU's freshman Alex Petan tallied a hat trick for his first outing
in a Huskies jersey.
LSSU hockey games will be broadcast live on 99.5 Yes FM with a
pay-per view video webcast on American One.
