Czuczman nets game-winning goal during 3-2 victory over OSU

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State continued its string of splits with a 3-2 victory over Ohio State Saturday at the Taffy Abel Arena.

Seniors Nick McParland and Domenic Monardo got the Lakers off to a good start with first-period goals, and LSSU (7-7-0 overall, 4-4-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) moved into sixth place in the CCHA with the win.

McParland (4-6—10) tallied the first goal at 4:41 from Monardo (4-7—11) and junior defenseman Zach Sternberg (2-7—9). Monardo notched LSSU's second goal of the game at 8:59 of the first period from freshman defenseman Eric Drapluk (1-5—6). The senior duo leads the Lakers in points so far this season.

Ohio State (5-4-3 overall, 4-2-2 CCHA), which entered the contest with a three-game win streak, pulled starting goalie Collin Olson after the Lakers pulled ahead 2-0. Brady Hjelle (3-2-2), who leads the CCHA in overall goals-against average, took the loss for OSU between the pipes. Ohio State's Darik Angeli scored the lone second-period goal at the 55-second mark and nearly had a chance to tie the game when LSSU took a penalty a minute later. Lake Superior State fended off the Buckeyes the rest of the period.

Sophomore defenseman Kevin Czuczman (2-3—5) scored LSSU's game-winning goal at 3:10 of the third on an assist from freshman defenseman Zach Loesch (0-4—4). OSU came within one goal of the Lakers at 17:42 when Ryan Dzingel scored a power-play extra-attacker goal.

Kevin Kapalka (3-2-0) made his first start for the Lakers since suffering an injury on Oct. 26, notching 23 saves for the Lakers. He defended OSU's extra-attacker surge during the final two minutes of the third period.

Olson made eight saves for OSU, while Hjelle totaled 18 saves in the loss.

The Lakers held OSU to 1-for-5, and LSSU was 0-for-3 on the power-play.

The Lakers return home Dec. 14-15 to face Northern Michigan for their final games of 2012.
