Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State continued
its string of splits with a 3-2 victory over Ohio State Saturday at
the Taffy Abel Arena.
Seniors Nick McParland and Domenic Monardo got the Lakers off to
a good start with first-period goals, and LSSU (7-7-0 overall,
4-4-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) moved into sixth place
in the CCHA with the win.
McParland (4-6—10) tallied the first goal at 4:41 from
Monardo (4-7—11) and junior defenseman Zach Sternberg
(2-7—9). Monardo notched LSSU's second goal of the game
at 8:59 of the first period from freshman defenseman Eric Drapluk
(1-5—6). The senior duo leads the Lakers in points so far
this season.
Ohio State (5-4-3 overall, 4-2-2 CCHA), which entered
the contest with a three-game win streak, pulled starting
goalie Collin Olson after the Lakers pulled ahead 2-0. Brady Hjelle
(3-2-2), who leads the CCHA in overall goals-against
average, took the loss for OSU between the pipes. Ohio State's
Darik Angeli scored the lone second-period goal at the
55-second mark and nearly had a chance to tie the game when LSSU
took a penalty a minute later. Lake Superior State fended off the
Buckeyes the rest of the period.
Sophomore defenseman Kevin Czuczman (2-3—5) scored
LSSU's game-winning goal at 3:10 of the third on an
assist from freshman defenseman Zach Loesch (0-4—4). OSU
came within one goal of the Lakers at 17:42 when Ryan
Dzingel scored a power-play extra-attacker goal.
Kevin Kapalka (3-2-0) made his first start for the Lakers since
suffering an injury on Oct. 26, notching 23 saves for the
Lakers. He defended OSU's extra-attacker surge during the
final two minutes of the third period.
Olson made eight saves for OSU, while Hjelle totaled 18
saves in the loss.
The Lakers held OSU to 1-for-5, and LSSU was 0-for-3 on the
power-play.
The Lakers return home Dec. 14-15 to face Northern Michigan for
their final games of 2012.
