Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State interim head
coach Shannon Eggers is counting on the Fall 2012 recruiting class
to provide a shooting touch to the Laker women's basketball
program in 2013-14.
Megan Harkema (6-0 forward/Rockford, Mich.) of Grand Rapids-West
Catholic, Mackenzie Edwards (5-7 guard) of Gaylord, Crishauna
Harper (5-5 guard/Sterling Heights, Mich.) of Henry Ford II, and
Kelsey Ance (5-10 guard/forward) of Petoskey have signed National
Letters of Intent to play for LSSU.
Harper averaged 10 points, four rebounds, six assists and four
steals per game last season for Henry Ford II, which is coached by
Matt Joseph, father of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Player of the Year Emily Joseph '11. Edwards, a
standout student with a 4.0 grade point average, averaged 18 points
and five rebounds per game for Gaylord, coached by Kelly (Krajniak)
Parker, a two-time All-America guard at Oakland University.
“Crishauna was taught by Coach Joseph, and he taught her
the fundamentals and what the point guard job entails –
passing the ball, eliminating turnovers and knocking down the
shot,” Eggers said. “She'll give us depth at
point guard. She'll learn from Raven Trammell and our other
returners about the pace and flow of the game. She's a lefty
and very athletic.
“Mackenzie will help us immediately on the perimeter and
knocking down the three,” Eggers continued.
“She's another lefty with a high basketball IQ. She
plays for a great coach at Gaylord and was taught the right things
from a young age. Unfortunately she's out right now with a
broken hand, but I can see her fitting into our offense and giving
us a shooter on the floor at all times.”
Harkema, another 4.0 student, averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds
and four blocks per game for West Catholic in 2011-12. She is
capable of playing small forward or power forward at the college
level.
“She is a blue-collar worker,” Eggers said.
“She works hard on every possession, and she is smart on and
off the court. She gives us depth at the post position and adds to
our defense in being versatile enough to guard on the perimeter as
well as inside."
Ance is a small forward with three-point shooting range. She
averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals per game for the
Northmen last season.
“She gives us the potential to use different
lineups,” Eggers said. “Kelsey has been playing at a
high level every summer. It's nice to have two players from
right below the bridge. She committed to us very early and really
wanted to come here.”
LSSU, whose only senior is All-GLIAC Second-Team forward Maria
Blazejewski, plays host to Malone at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Walsh
at 3 p.m. Saturday.
