Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - A Wayne State men's basketball team that is
still contending for a chance to host a Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game took care of
business Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium by beating Lake
Superior State, 76-54.
The Lakers (11-14 overall, 6-12 GLIAC), who upset the Warriors
at this time last season, failed to be the spoiler again. Wayne
State (17-8 overall, 14-5 GLIAC) stormed to a 20-4 lead during the
first eight minutes of the game. LSSU, which trailed 39-25 at
halftime, cut the lead to 10 points early in the second half, but
never closed within single digits.
Ian Larkin scored 23 points, and Ike Udanoh added 15 points and
11 rebounds to lead the Warriors. WSU shot 56.3 percent from the
field, including 6-of-14 from three-point range, and made 16-of-22
free throws.
Derek Billing scored 16 points and Kyle Hunt added 12 to lead
LSSU. Laker coach Steve Hettinga went deep into his bench and got
an impressive eight minutes from rookie Austin Shell, who
contributed a season-high four points and four rebounds.
Lake Superior State shot 36.8 percent from the field, including
4-of-10 from behind the arc, and made 8-of-11 free throws.
Both teams totaled 30 rebounds.
LSSU concludes its season with a 3 p.m. game Saturday against
Findlay. The Lakers will pay tribute to seniors Hunt and Mike
Boylan before the game.
