SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's
tennis team pulled off its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference victory of the season by beating Michigan Tech,
5-4, Saturday in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center.
The Lakers improved to 4-11 overall and 1-6 in the GLIAC.
Michigan Tech is now 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC.
Felipe Baptista (Sau Paulo, Brazil) was the lone double winner
for the Lakers. Baptista and doubles partner Joao Gaberiel-Oliveira
(Sao Loureco, Brazil) defeated their Michigan Tech opponent 8-3 at
the No. 1 spot. Baptista and Oliveira are now 6-7 overall at the
No. 1 doubles position after winning their last two matches.
Baptista played a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles to win,
2-6, 7-5, 6-3. He moved to 9-5 overall at No. 1 singles.
Travis Toth (St. Johns, Mich.) lost a close match at No. 2
singles, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1). Dane Fosgard (St. Clair, Mich.) won
in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (7-1), 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
David Weizcor (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) gave LSSU the victory with
the final win of the day, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Lakers play their last two matches of the season at Lake
Erie April 13 and at Ohio Dominican April 14.
