Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Lake Superior State's
six-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at
10th-ranked Western Michigan Saturday.
The Lakers (12-11-1 overall and 7-8-1-1 Central Collegiate
Hockey Association), who claimed two of six points for the weekend,
were among eight CCHA teams that split series decisions. WMU
(13-5-4 overall, 9-3-2-1 CCHA) and Northern Michigan took four
points each from LSSU and Miami, respectively, while Notre Dame and
Michigan State, and Ohio State and Ferris State split. Alaska beat
Michigan twice for the only sweep of the weekend.
As of release time the Lakers are sixth in the CCHA with 23
points, while Western Michigan is tied for second place with
30 points.
After 20 minutes of scoreless play, WMU took a 1-0 lead on Mike
Leone's goal at 2:48 of the second period. LSSU senior forward
Domenic Monardo (9-9—18) tied the game 1-1 at 7:25
with an assist from junior forward Kellan Lain
(5-6—11).
The Broncos scored two unanswered power-play goals. Dane
Walters netted the game-winning goal at 18:21 of the second.
At 7:37 of the third period, Dennis Brown put the Broncos up
3-1.
Junior goaltender Kevin Murdock (7-7-0) took the loss for
the Lakers, stopping 38 shots. Frank Slubowski tallied 18
saves for the Broncos. For the weekend, WMU out-shot LSSU,
86-24.
The Lakers were 0-for-5 on the power-play Saturday, while WMU
was 2-for-7.
