Box Score MIDLAND - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team
overcame Northwood's domination at the free-throw line and on the
boards, and an early 11-point deficit to beat the Timberwolves
58-53 Saturday.
The Lakers (5-9 overall, 4-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) improved to 4-3 in their last seven games.
LSSU fell behind 20-9 during the first 10:15 of the game, but
Raven Trammell made two three-pointers and Taylor Greene made two
layups as the Lakers outscored the Timberwolves 12-2 during a
six-minute span late in the first half. The game was tied, 26-26,
at halftime.
Northwood's last lead of the game was 40-39 with 10:28 remaining
in the second half. Greene, Kandace Crittendon and Candice LaCross
all scored to protect a five-point LSSU lead during the final four
minutes. Maria Blazejewski sealed the win with two free throws at
the 16-second mark, and added two more with five seconds to
go.
Blazejewski finished with 17 points and six rebounds, and
Crittendon followed with 16 points and seven rebounds. Greene
contributed a career-high 14 points and three assists.
The Lakers shot 43.8 percent from the field, including 3-of-7
from behind the arc, and made 13-of-18 free throws. They compiled
10 blocked shots as a team and continue to lead the GLIAC in that
category.
Lauren Robak totaled 13 points and six rebounds to lead
Northwood (7-9 overall, 5-5 GLIAC). Gabrielle Rivette and Rachel
Church added 12 points each. The Timberwolves, who were limited to
seven field goals during each half, shot 21.5 percent from the
field, including 3-of-14 from three-point range. They made 22-of-24
free throws and out-rebounded LSSU, 48-34.
LSSU plays host to Grand Valley State at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
