Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State and Hillsdale, two
women's basketball teams struggling for wins in 2013-14, battled to
the finish Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Chargers took
advantage of LSSU's 12-for-21 second-half free-throw shooting to
win 61-58.
LSSU's last lead of the game was 55-54 with 2:05 remaining after
a three-pointer by Stephanie Fisher, who led the Lakers with 21
points. Hillsdale's Kayla Geffert answered with a three-pointer at
1:46.
The Lakers (0-6 overall, 0-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) missed two field-goal attempts and were
3-for-4 at the free-throw line during the final 1:22. Hillsdale
protected its slim lead by going 4-for-4 at the line.
Raven Trammell scored 13 points and had three steals, and
Kandace Crittendon totaled 11 points for LSSU. Laura VanEs was
scoreless but grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. She also blocked
two shots.
LSSU shot 35.4 percent from the field, including 6-of-17 from
three-point range, and made 18-of-31 free throws.
Ashlyn Landherr scored a team-high 15 points, and Megan Fogt
turned in a double double of 13 points and 20 rebounds for
Hillsdale (2-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC). The Chargers shot 31.3 percent
from the field, including 5-of-14 from behind the arc, and made
16-of-22 free throws. They dominated the boards, 53-35.
LSSU plays at Malone on Thursday.
