Lakers lose a tough battle to No. 3 Miami

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State is one of only two teams this season to score four goals against No. 3 Miami this season, but it wasn't enough to beat the RedHawks Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers (15-17-1 overall, 10-14-1-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) suffered a tough 5-4 loss during a back-and-forth game that was decided by Marc Hagel's goal at 13:34 of the third period.

The RedHawks (20-8-5 overall, 15-6-4-4 CCHA) took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 3:46 of the first. Dan Radke (4-14--18) scored LSSU's first goal from Chris Ciotti (10-8--18) and Andrew Perrault (1-12--13). Radke and Ciotti both moved into a two-way tie for third on the Lakers in points.

Zach Sternberg (5-11--16) shot through the slot to score his third power-play goal of the season, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead at 10:20 of the first. Nick McParland (6-15--21) and Buddy Robinson (8-8--16) drew the assists.

Riley Barber of Miami tied the game at two after taking advantage of a Laker puck handler being tripped in the RedHawks' zone. Max Cook gave the RedHawks a 3-2 lead at 12:03 of the second period.

At 1:41 of the third period, Domenic Monardo (18-11--29) netted his first goal of the game from Radke and Sternberg. Miami answered again with a goal a 6:44 of the third.

Monardo scored his second goal of the night at 9:59 during a 5-on-3 power play. Colin Campbell (0-2--2) and Radke had the assists. With Monardo's two-goal game he moved into a tie for first in CCHA goal scoring with 14.

Hagel made the most of a Laker turnover on a clearing pass and tallied the game-winning from Joe Hartman and Kevin Morris.

Kevin Murdock (9-11-0) stopped 46 shots on goal, while Jay Williams made 25 saves for the RedHawks. LSSU also had one disallowed goal.

The Lakers were 2-for-7 on the power-play and held Miami to 1-for-6.
