men's basketball team a few sleepless nights.
After beating the Lakers in overtime on Jan. 26 in Sault Ste.
Marie, the Huskies hit a game-winning shot at the second-half
buzzer to win 79-78 Saturday in Houghton.
LSSU (13-12 overall, 10-11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) canned four three-pointers during the final four
minutes to claw its way back from an eight-point deficit. Alex
Williams hit a triple with 24 seconds remaining to cut MTU's lead
to 76-75. After Michigan Tech's Ali Haidar made the second of two
free throws with 15 seconds to go, Laker Derek Kinney canned
another three-pointer at the two-second mark for a 78-77
LSSU lead.
MTU in-bounder Alex Culy threw a quarterback pass downcourt
to an open T.J. Brown, who made a game-winning layup at the
buzzer.
The Huskies (18-7 overall, 15-6 GLIAC) outscored Lake
Superior State at the free-throw line, 28-7.
LSSU center Cameron Metz scored a team-leading 19 points before
fouling out. Williams finished with 17 points and four steals.
Kinney totaled 15 points and eight rebounds, and Derek Billing
contributed 12 points and six assists. Rashaun Carroll came off the
bench to total 11 points and five assists.
LSSU shot 51.7 percent from the field, including 7-of-15
from three point range. The Lakers made 7-of-9 free
throws. They outrebounded MTU, 25-21.
Haidar was 18-of-20 at the free-throw line and led Michigan
Tech with 36 points and seven rebounds. The GLIAC pre-season
player of the year averaged 35.5 points per game in two
regular-season contests against LSSU. Ben Stelzer followed with 17
points. MTU shot 56.4 percent from the field, including 7-of-15
from behind the arc, and made 28-of-33 free throws.
The Huskies led 36-33 at halftime.
