Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Wayne State secured a share of the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division women's
basketball title by beating Lake Superior State 80-66 Saturday
at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
WSU improved to 19-7 overall and 17-5 in the GLIAC and will
likely share the title with Michigan Tech, which was leading
Northern Michigan at press time.
Senior forward Maria Blazejewski totaled 22 points and five
rebounds in her final game for LSSU (5-21 overall, 4-18 GLIAC). She
ended her career fifth on the Laker all-time scoring
list with 1,585 points.
Blazejewski followed two free throws with a jumper to cap a
14-1 run as Lake Superior State trimmed an early
second-half 18-point deficit to six points, 70-64, with 3:10
remaining. Wayne State garnered the offensive rebound after a
blocked shot by LSSU's Kandace Crittendon and extended the lead
back to eight points, 72-64, on Phaebre Colbert's layup.
LSSU cut it to seven points, 72-65, with 1:55 remaining, but
couldn't get any closer.
Crittendon finished with 15 points and five rebounds. LSSU shot
35.6 percent from the field, including 1-of-10 from three-point
range, and made 23-of-25 free throws.
Talisha Bridges led Wayne State with 21 points and five
rebounds, and was one of four Warriors in double figures. Kristen
Long scored 17 points, and Juanita Cochran compiled 10 points and
12 rebounds.
Wayne State shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 6-of-14
from three-point range, and made 18-of-25 free throws. The Warriors
out-rebounded LSSU, 47-32.
Both teams totaled nine blocked shots.
WSU led at halftime, 41-26.
