Trammell combined for 24 second-half points as the Lake Superior
State women's basketball team played its best 20-minute stretch of
the season to come from behind and beat Saginaw Valley State 61-54
Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
The Lakers (4-11 overall, 4-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) are 3-2 in their last five games after getting
off to a 1-9 start. They trailed 27-22 at halftime and were down by
as many as eight points during the second half.
Fisher, who led all scorers with 19 points, hit a three-pointer
at 3:51 of the second half to cut SVSU's eight-point lead to five,
52-47. She had a steal and layup at 2:56 to make it 52-49.
Trammell, who finished with 18 points, had an offensive rebound
and layup to trim the deficit to 52-51 with 2:15 remaining.
Freshman Mackenzie Edwards' only basket of the game gave the Lakers
their first lead, 53-52, since early in the first half.
Alex Morrow, who totaled career highs of 11 points and 15
rebounds, grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 1:18 to
go. She made two free throws for a 55-52 LSSU edge, and Trammell
made two more after a defensive rebound by April LaCross at the
46-second mark. Trammell went on to go 4-for-4 at the free-throw
line during the final 23 seconds.
LSSU shot 41.8 percent from the field for its best shooting
performance since Dec. 12. The Lakers were 3-of-16 from three-point
range and 12-of-15 at the line. They out-rebounded SVSU, 39-34.
Kayla Womack totaled 16 points and six rebounds to lead Saginaw
Valley State (6-6 overall, 4-5 GLIAC). Shelby Herrington and
Kristen Greene scored 10 points each. The Cardinals shot 39 percent
from the field, including 2-of-11 from behind the arc, and made
6-of-8 free throws.
LSSU plays host to Northwood at 1 p.m. Saturday.
