Box Score SOUTH BEND, Ind.- Lake Superior State fell 6-3 to the
Fighting Irish of Notre Dame after controlling a 3-2 lead heading
into the third period of the first of a two game series in South
Bend, Ind.
Senior goaltender Kevin Murdock (4-6-0) blocked 43 shots Friday
to set a season high, however the Irish were able to put up four
unanswered goals in the third period.
Lake State (11-11-1) took an early penalty (8:03) after freshman
Matt Johnson (3-1--4) took a five minute major and game misconduct
on a knee-to-knee penalty. Notre Dame's Austin Wuthrich tallied his
third goal of the season during the power play. The Lakers answered
near the end of the first period whenCampbell (8-8--16)
notched his eigth goal of the season from freshman Garrett Clemment
(3-8--11) and the captain Matt Bruneteau (1-2--3).
In the second period the Lakers caught their first lead of the
game after Ian Miller (2-2--4) scored at the 4:23 mark. Notre Dame
(13-8-1) scored just over five minutes later (9:33). Jeff Costello
was credited with the power-play goal. Lake Superior State tallied
its final score of the game before the end of the period when Kevin
Czuczman (8-8--16) scored on the power play with 1:59 remaining in
the period.
In the third period the Irish capitalized on the second goal
from Wuthrich, a pair of goals from Sam Herr (12 goals), and a
single goal from Mario Lucia, who tallied his 11th goal of the
season. Wuthrich's goal came one second after a UND power play had
ended. Senior goaltender Steven Summerhays recorded 19 saves in the
victory for Notre Dame.
The Lakers were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Irish
finished 2-for-5.
LSSU hopes to snap a four-game losing skid when it facec Notre
Dame in the second of the two game series. Puck drop is set for
7:05 p.m. Saturday night.
