ALLENDALE - After getting shut down by Lake Superior State's defense during the first half of Thursday's women's basketball game, Grand Valley State responded with a dominating second-half performance to win 74-67.

GVSU (9-6 overall, 7-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), which snapped a three-game losing skid, pulled away from a 31-31 halftime deadlock by shooting 46.4 percent from the field and making 4-of-7 three-point attempts. GVSU shot only 27 percent from the field during the first half against the league's No. 2-ranked defense.

Grand Valley State scored the first seven points of the second half, and Lake Superior State (4-13 overall, 4-7 GLIAC) never completely recovered. LSSU closed within two points on four occasions and cut it to 60-58 with 4:50 remaining. GVSU answered with a three-point play and extended the lead to eight points, 68-60, with 1:52 to go.

Kandace Crittendon, ejoying her biggest game since Nov. 22, totaled 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, to lead LSSU. Mackenzie Edwards followed with 12 points and Stephanie Fisher scored 10. Megan Manninen added nine points, and Alex Morrow finished with six points and seven rebounds.

LSSU shot 44.1 percent from the field, including 8-of-19 from three-point range, and made 7-of-11 free throws.

Kayla Dawson totaled 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Dani Crandall added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Grand Valley State. GVSU shot 35.4 percent from the field for the game, making 6-of-18 three-point attempts. The Lakers were 22-of-31 at the free-throw line. The out-rebounded LSSU, 49-36.

LSSU plays at Ferris State at 1 p.m. Saturday.
