LSSU win makes Hettinga the Lakers' all-time leader in men's basketball victories

Box Score

BIG RAPIDS - No. 23-ranked Lake Superior State defeated Ferris State 75-70 Saturday to give seventh-year head coach Steve Hettinga is 107th win at LSSU and make him the all-time wins leader among LSSU men's basketball coaches.

Hettinga, who is probably more interested in the 17-3 Lakers maintaining their status atop the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division standings, surpassed the former record of 106 held by Jack Brighton since 1968.

LSSU, which is 9-3 in the GLIAC, made the most of some miss-match opportunities in the post to beat the Bulldogs (6-10 overall, 5-7 GLIAC). Laker senior center Cameron Metz scored 25 points before fouling out, and junior forward Jake Blake turned in 11 points. The post duo both had double doubles combined for 23 rebounds.

Both also hit season highs in both categories GLIAC competition.

LSSU held a slim 33-31 lead at halftime. Metz scored four points and Blake three during an 11-2 run that gave the Lakers a 46-39 lead four minutes into the second half.

As foul trouble mounted for Metz and back-up center Lucas Holt, Ferris State trimmed a 10-point deficit to three points, 55-52. That's when guard Derek Billing and forward Alex Williams took over. They reeled off six points to give LSSU a 69-59 lead with 3:05 remaining.

The Lakers had an eight-point lead down the stretch until FSU's Dietrich Lever ended the game with a three-pointer.

Tony Harris finished with 12 points and Billing had nine for Lake Superior State, which snapped a two-game losing skid. The Lakers shot 41.3 percent from the field, but made only 2-of-15 three-point attempts. They were 21-of-30 at the free-throw line and dominated the boards, 50-37.

Jared Stolicker and Drew Lehman scored 14 points each for Ferris State. The Bulldogs shot 34.5 percent from the field, including 5-of-20 from behind the arc, and made 27-of-41 free throws.

LSSU plays Thursday, Jan. 30, at Northern Michigan.
