Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - After seven second-half lead changes, Lake
Superior State and defending Division II national champion Ashland
were deadlocked, 54-54, with a minute to go in Saturday's women's
basketball game.
Ashland (6-4 overall, 4-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) converted a three-point play 30 seconds later and the
Eagles hung on for a 60-57 victory.
LSSU (2-10 overall, 2-4 GLIAC) missed two shots and a the front
end of a one-and-one during the ensuing possession. The Lakers were
forced to foul during the final 10 seconds. Senior Raven Trammell
canned a three-pointer with seven seconds to go, but AU's Kelsey
Peare answered by making two free throws. Laker Kandace
Crittendon's desperation three-pointer at the buzzer came up
short.
Stephanie Fisher totaled 15 points and six rebounds to lead
LSSU. Trammell followed with 14 points, and Laura VanEs totaled 10
points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
Lake Superior State shot 34.4 percent from the field, including
6-of-28 from three-point range, and made 9-of-15 free throws.
Ashland's Suzy Wollenhaupt led all scorers with 19 points, 12
rebounds and three blocked shots. Taylor Woods followed with 11
points. AU shot 39.6 percent from the field, including 2-of-9 from
behind the arc, and made 20-of-28 free throws. The Eagles held a
38-37 rebounding edge.
LSSU plays at Ohio Dominican on Jan. 9.
