Box Score HOUGHTON - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team kept
sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference North Division with Saturday's 79-78 victory at
Michigan Tech.
A loss would have landed LSSU (19-3 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) in a
potential three-way tie for the top spot. Instead, the Lakers head
into Monday's home game against Wayne State with the GLIAC's best
record. They also finished an impressive 3-1 during their toughest
road test of the season.
The game was tied three times during the final 2:12 of
regulation. LSSU junior forward Alex Williams canned a crucial
three-pointer to knot it, 76-76, with 51 seconds remaining.
MTU's Like Heller grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for a
78-76 Huskies lead with 20 seconds to go. LSSU senior guard Derek
Billing responded with a layup and converted a three-point play for
the decisive score.
MTU (13-5 overall, 10-5 GLIAC) missed the front end of a
one-and-one with three seconds remaining.
Senior center Cameronn Metz led LSSU with 21 points, and
Williams followed with 13 points and a team-leading six rebounds.
Billing scored all 12 of his points during the second half.
Metz averaged 22.2 points per game during his last three
outings.
Freshman guard Jordan Dasuqi scored 11 points, and junior guard
Tony Harris followed with 10. Harris and Billing combined for 11
assists.
LSSU shot 53.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-18 from
three-point range, and made 12-of-14 free throws. The Lakers were
16-of-26 (61.5 percent) from the field during the first half and
led 43-40.
Lake Superior State was up by as many as 11 points during the
first half and trailed by as many as six during the second.
Austin Armga totaled 28 points and seven rebounds to lead
Michigan Tech. Ben Stelzer and Troy Hecht scored 12 each, and
Heller had 10. MTU shot 62.2 percent from the field, including
8-of-14 from behind the arc, and made 14-of-18 free throws. The
Huskies out-rebounded LSSU, 26-22.
