Box Score MARQUTTE, Mich.- Lake Superior State fell to the Wildcats of Northern Michigan Saturday evening by a score of 5-1. NMU claimed the Cappo Cup by an 8-6 total-goals margin.
Leading the way for the Wildcats (12-16-2, 10-11-1 WCHA) was Erik Higby, who picked up a pair of second=period goals. Stephan Vigier scored a first-period power-play goal to finish with a four-point weekend.
Vigier scored with just under three minutes into the opening frame. The Lakers (14-15-1, 10-12-0) out-shot the Wildcats 10-4 in the first period while drawing the game to a tie with 40 seconds remaining in the period. Freshman standout Alex Globke (11-18—29) recorded the late goal with the man-advantage. Assisting on the goal was the Lakers' top blueline scorer, Kevin Czuczman (9-10—19), and the senior center Dan Radke (5-16—21).
The Wildcats opened the game up in the second period with the pair of Higby goals occurring just 1:06 apart. They went on to outshoot the Lakers by a margin of 20-7.
John Siemer gave the Wildcats a three-goal advantage on a delayed-penalty call with the extra attacker. Dominik Shine added a late-period goal, extending the lead to 5-1 and giving Northern Michigan its 13th Cappo Cup with a +2 goal differential on the weekend.
The Lakers were outshot 33-32 as LSSU senior goaltender Kevin Murdock took the loss. Mathias Dahlstrom picked up 31 saves in the winning effort for Northern Michigan.
The Lakers travel to Alabama-Huntsville next weekend. The Lakers return home Feb. 28- March 1 to face Minnesota State- Mankato and to honor the senior class.
