Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Senior Colin Campbell and junior Stephen Perfetto scored goals for the Lake Superior State hockey team, which defeated Alabama-Huntsville by a score of 2-1 Friday night.
The win gives the Lakers a 4-2-1 all-time series record against the Chargers and propels the Lakers ahead of the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the eighth and final playoff spot. The win ties Lake Superior State with Bemidji State in the standing with a game still in-hand for the Lakers.
The victory also marked the return of senior goaltender Kevin Kapalka (8-5-1). Kapalka had missed time since an injury kept him out of action since leaving in the first period Jan. 10 against Bemidji.
The Lakers (15-15-1, 11-12-1 WCHA) trailed the Chargers (1-31-1, 1-21-1 WCHA) after the first period of play after Brandon Carlson scored a power-play marker with 1:56 left in the period. That was the only flaw for Kapalka in his return as the Lakers' starting goaltender.
The Lakers stormed back late in the second period after senior Campbell (11-12-23) netted the tying goal with the lone assist going to Kevin Czuczman. Just over two minutes later, Perfetto (6-13—19) gave the Lakers a lead that they never relinquished. Freshmen Matt Johnson (4-5—9) and Garret Clemment (3-12—15) combined for the assists on the eventual game-winner.
The third period played out without either team able to put the puck in the opponent's net. The Lakers outshot the Chargers, 44-24. UAH goaltender Matt Larose faced a flurry of pucks in the first game of the two-game series. Larose finished with 42 saves, while Kapalka stood strong making 22 saves to secure the victory.
