Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Michigan Tech was able to quell a late surge
by Lake Superior State to escape Cooper Gymnasium with a 72-60
women's basketball win over the Lakers Saturday.
The Huskies (18-7 overall, 16-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference) jumped out to an early 13-2 run to start the
action. The Lakers (5-22 overall, 5-16 GLIAC) cut the lead to six
points five times in the first half, but the Huskies pushed it to
an 11-point game at the half.
Stephanie Fisher led the Lakers in the first
half with 12 points on 4-9 shooting. She was 2-of-6 from behind the
arc and tied LSSU's single-season three-pointers record of 55. She
currently shares the mark with Nicole Marshall (2009-10).
In the second half the Huskies held a 15-point lead until Laker
freshman Kelsey Ance began to dominate the low block and
scored 14 points in the second half. Ance
finished the evening with a season-high 18 points and four
rebounds.
The Lakers cut the lead to seven points with 11:38 remaining,
but MTU scored the next six points to regain a double-figure
lead.
Leading the way for Michigan Tech was Mackenzie Perttu scoring
22 points and collecting four rebounds. Danielle Blake added 19
points and Paige Albi had a double-double with 14 points and 11
rebounds.
The night was dedicated to the senior class of Laura Van Es, Candice LaCross, and Raven Trammell. Van
Es finished with seven points and 11 rebounds to go along with
three blocks and three assists. LaCross scored two points and seven rebounds. Trammell was not in the lineup and will miss the
remaining games this season due to injury.
LSSU shot 40 percent from the field, including 4-of-16 from
three-point range, and made 12-of-17 free throws.
MTU shot 40 percent from the field, including 4-of-14 from
behind the arc, and made 16-of-23 free throws. The Huskies
out-rebounded the Lakers, 42-37.
The Lakers wrap up the season Thursday at Wayne State.
