battled to the wire with Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference North Division co-leader Wayne State before losing
Thursday's regular-season finale, 80-74.
Sophomore forward April LaCross scored 14 points as LSSU (5-23
overall, 5-17 GLIAC) built a 37-30 halftime lead. Wayne State (20-6
overall, 17-5 GLIAC), which entered the game tied with Michigan
Tech for the North Division title, eventually caught the Lakers,
46-46, with 12:51 remaining in the second half.
The Warriors pulled away from a 59-59 deadlock by scoring seven
unanswered points.
LSSU's Laura VanEs and Kandace Crittendon did the scoring as the
Lakers fought back to tie it, 66-66, with 3:24 remaining. The game
was also tied, 74-74, at 1:05 after layups by Stephanie Fisher and
VanEs.
Wayne State closed out the win by taking advantage of a missed
one-and-one and two jumpers, and a Laker turnover during the key
final moments.
LaCross finished with a season-high 21 points and six rebounds
to lead the Lakers. VanEs scored 14 points, and Crittendon had 13
points and eight rebounds. LSSU shot a season-high 54.1 percent
from the field, including 5-of-15 from three-point range. The
Lakers made 3-of-10 free throws.
Kayla Bridges totaled 21 points and six rebounds to pace Wayne
State. Imari Redfield followed with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Jackie Jones and Des Lavita Stephens added 13 points each. Jones
also contributed 10 rebounds.
The Warriors shot 41.3 percent from the field, including 4-of-17
from three-point range. They were 14-of-25 at the free-throw line
and controlled the boards, 52-32.
Fisher was 0-for-4 from three-point range and will share the
LSSU single-season school record of 55 three-pointers with Nicole
Marshall (2009-10).
