Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Lake Superior fell to Minnesota State
Mankota Friday evening by a score of 5-0. The match-up between
Western Collegiate Hockey Association foes was the first ever
between the two programs.
Minnesota State jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first
period, getting goals from Max Gaede 2:41 minutes into the game and
Dylan Margonari 8:05 minutes into the first frame. The Mavericks
(20-13-0, 18-7-0 WCHA) outshot the Lakers (16-16-1, 12-13-0 WCHA)
15-2 in the first period.
Margoni picked up his second goal of the evening 3:27 into the
second period. The second tally from Margoni was the lone goal of
the period, sending the Lakers in to the the second intermission
trailing 3-0. The Lakers were again outshot by the Mavericks in the
second period, this time by a 13-4 margin.
Josh Nelson picked up his first goal of the season for the
Mavericks, a power-play goal, with 5:30 minutes remaining in
regulation. Less than a minute later the Mavericks got their fifth
goal from Chase Grant at the 15:27 mark.
The Lakers were out shot 40-14 by the Mavericks but hit three
posts. In net for the Lakers was Kevin Kapalka (9-6-1), who made 35 saves on the
night.
Saturday is Senior Night and the Lakers will honor their seniors
following the match-up with Minnesota State. Adult and children
tickets are $5. The game will be available on 99.5 YES FM and
America One Sports.
