Lakers edge Seawolves in series opener

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE- Lake Superior defeated Alaska Anchorage 5-3 in the first of two home games in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series. Both teams came off a bye week with plenty of energy, and the Seawolves entered the series with the WCHA's best January record of 5-2-1.

The Lakers (13-13-1, 9-10-0) were led offensively by their top line performers of freshman Alex Globke (10-17--27), and seniors Colin Campbell (10-11--21) and Dan Radke (5-13--18).  Globke was stellar in the performance racking up three assists. Campbell and Radke each tallied a goal and an assist in the victory.

The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. The Lakers took a 5-2 lead in to the second period after three goals by the Lakers (capped off by a  Radke power-play goal at the buzzer) and a goal by the Seawolves all with under four minutes to play in the period. The Lakers also received goals from Ian Miller (4-2--6), Zach Sternberg (5-11--16), and Andrew Dommett (6-3--9).

Dommett returned from injury to score the game-winning goal against the Seawolves in his first appearance since scoring a goal against Michigan Tech (Jan. 4).

Between the pipes, Lake Superior was guided by senior Kevin Murdock (6-8-0) who turned aside 23 of the 26 shots on net. Chris Kamal (6-4-1) was credited with the loss for the Seawolves and was replaced by Michael Matayas (2-2-1) following the fourth Laker goal by Dommett.

LSSU was 2-for-7 on the power play, while UAA (13-11-3 overall, 9-9-3 WCHA) was 0-for-2.

The victorious Lakers will face the Seawolves in game two of the "Whiteout Weekend" at 7:07 p.m. Saturday. The game is dedicated to Gil Somes, former equipment manager for the Lakers.
