HOUGHTON - In a matchup between the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference top two defensive teams, Lake Superior State prevailed, winning 66-57 Saturday at Michigan Tech.

LSSU (17-3 overall, 12-2 GLIAC) accomplished the rare feat of winning on MTU's intimidating Student Development Center floor for the second straight year and snapped the Huskies' four-game win streak. This year, the Lakers prevailed by scoring 24 points off a season-high 19 MTU turnovers. They also held GLIAC scoring leader Ben Stelzer to 12 points.

Lake Superior State, which extended its one-game lead over MTU in the GLIAC North Division standings to two games, trimmed a seven-point deficit to 26-25 by halftime. The Lakers turned momentum in their favor when Alex Williams followed two Devin Daly free throws with back-to-back three-pointers for a 36-31 lead.

Michigan Tech (13-5 overall, 10-4 GLIAC) threatened with six minutes to go, but LSSU responded with a 9-2 run that included three-pointers by Akaemji Williams and Tony Harris.

Daly scored 10 first-half points and led the Lakers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Alex Williams and Harris scored 15 points each, and Akaemji Williams finished with 10. Daly, Akaemji Williams and Harris also combined to total eight steals.

LSSU shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 6-of-18 from three-point range, and made 16-of-23 free throws.

The Lakers lead the GLIAC in scoring defense, allowing only 62.3 points per game.

Stelzer was the only double-figure scorer for Michigan Tech, which shot 46 percent from the field, including 6-of-24 from three-point range, and made 5-of-9 free throws. The Huskies out-rebounded LSSU, 35-24.

LSSU, playing its third game in five days, hosts Northwood at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The Lakers head into the contest tied for second place in the North Division with Saginaw Valley State, which dropped a 62-57 decision to first-place Ferris State. FSU and SVSU entered Saturday's game with 12-1 GLIAC records.
