HOUGHTON - In a matchup between the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference top two defensive teams, Lake Superior State
prevailed, winning 66-57 Saturday at Michigan Tech.
LSSU (17-3 overall, 12-2 GLIAC) accomplished the rare feat of
winning on MTU's intimidating Student Development Center floor for
the second straight year and snapped the Huskies' four-game win
streak. This year, the Lakers prevailed by scoring 24 points off a
season-high 19 MTU turnovers. They also held GLIAC scoring leader
Ben Stelzer to 12 points.
Lake Superior State, which extended its one-game lead over MTU
in the GLIAC North Division standings to two games, trimmed a
seven-point deficit to 26-25 by halftime. The Lakers turned
momentum in their favor when Alex Williams followed two Devin Daly
free throws with back-to-back three-pointers for a 36-31 lead.
Michigan Tech (13-5 overall, 10-4 GLIAC) threatened with six
minutes to go, but LSSU responded with a 9-2 run that included
three-pointers by Akaemji Williams and Tony Harris.
Daly scored 10 first-half points and led the Lakers with 17
points and eight rebounds. Alex Williams and Harris scored 15
points each, and Akaemji Williams finished with 10. Daly, Akaemji
Williams and Harris also combined to total eight steals.
LSSU shot 45.8 percent from the field, including 6-of-18 from
three-point range, and made 16-of-23 free throws.
The Lakers lead the GLIAC in scoring defense, allowing only 62.3
points per game.
Stelzer was the only double-figure scorer for Michigan Tech,
which shot 46 percent from the field, including 6-of-24 from
three-point range, and made 5-of-9 free throws. The Huskies
out-rebounded LSSU, 35-24.
LSSU, playing its third game in five days, hosts Northwood at
7:30 p.m. Monday. The Lakers head into the contest tied for second
place in the North Division with Saginaw Valley State, which
dropped a 62-57 decision to first-place Ferris State. FSU and SVSU
entered Saturday's game with 12-1 GLIAC records.
