Ashland hand Laker men's basketball its first GLIAC loss

ASHLAND, Ohio - An Ashland men's basketball team reeling from Friday's one-point home loss to Northwood snapped back to upset 24th-ranked Lake Superior State 70-68 Sunday at Kates Gymnasium.

The Eagles (9-3 overall, 3-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) ended LSSU's impressive early-season win streak at 10 games. The Lakers (10-2 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) have a chance to start a new streak on their home court at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Ohio Dominican. Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State are the only two teams still undefeated in league play.

Ashland made the most of a 12-0 start to the game, during which LSSU missed its first eight shots and committed two turnovers. The Lakers cut the deficit to five points with six minutes remaining during the first half and trailed 32-25 at halftime.

LSSU had the hot start in the second half and took its first lead of the game, 34-33, on a Jordan Dasuqi three-pointer at 17:09.

The lead changed eight times during the second half, but Ashland never trailed after going ahead 57-55 with 4:46 remaining.

LSSU fought to the finish and Dasuqi made a layup with eight second to go, cutting a four-point deficit in half. Akaemji Williams followed with a steal, and Devin Daly missed a go-ahead three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Tony Harris totaled a season-high-tying 16 points and four assists to lead LSSU. Daly finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Akaemji Williams had 11 points to hit double figures in his third straight game. Mike Smutny added 10 points and a season-high-tying five rebounds.

LSSU shot 37.9 percent from the field, including 6-of-25 from three-point range, and made 18-of-24 free throws. The Lakers shot 31 percent from the field during the first half.

Cole Krizancic led Ashland with 20 points, and Wndell Davis followed with 10. The Eagles shot 49 percent from the field, including 5-of-15 from three-point range, and made 17-of-26 free throws.
