Top seed Bellarmine ends Lakers' impressive season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 22-ranked Lake Superior State entered Sunday's NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal game against third-ranked Bellarmine with a 3-3 all-time record in NCAA tournament play, and all three wins were overtime victories.

Two of the three LSSU losses were to No. 1 seeds during the semifinal round. Another top seed ended their season Sunday as regional host Bellarmine defeated the Lakers, 85-59.

The Knights take a 29-3 record into Tuesday's regional championship game against No. 3 seed Indianapolis. No. 4 seed Lake Superior State ended its season with a 26-7 record.

Bellarmine, which averages 80 points per game, took off to a 19-9 lead during the first 10 minutes of the game by making eight of its first 14 shots and all three three-point attempts. LSSU started out 3-of-17 during that span and shot 28.1 percent from the field during the first half. The Lakers trailed 36-24 at halftime.

BU's George Suggs opened the second half with a three-pointer, and hit another one at 14:19 to extend the Knights' lead to 17 points. LSSU cut it to 12 points, 47-35, with 12:53 remaining, then was out-scored 9-3 and trailed 56-38 with 10:32 to go.

Senior Tony Harris scored 20 points during his final collegiate game, and Devin Daly finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Alex Williams, who scored all eight of his points during the first half, picked up his third and fourth fouls during the first two minutes of the second half.

LSSU shot 32.8 percent from the field, including 9-of-31 from three-point range, and made 6-of-14 free throws.

Chris Whitehead scored 16 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Bellarmine. All-region first-team honoree Jake Thelen finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bellarmine shot 52.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-16 from three-point range, and made 18-of-21 free throws.
