Lakers fall to Chargers 82-57

HILLSDALE, Mich. - Lake Superior State women's basketball fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Hillsdale on Saturday, 82-57.

The Lakers (3-13, 2-8 GLIAC) were led by Tamara Novic's eight points in the first quarter but found themselves trailing 19-12 after the opening 10 minutes. Novic finished the game with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor.

The Chargers (8-6, 5-5 GLIAC) extended the lead with a big second quarter in which they shot 50 percent from the floor (7-14), including 5-for-7 from behind the three point arc. Five different Hillsdale players also registered a steal in the second quarter and helped force eight Laker turnovers in the quarter.

LSSU committed 10 turnovers in the first half, while the Chargers limited their miscues to just five.

Freshman Rachel Novotny came off the bench and led the team with a career-high 14 points in the reserve role usually played by Novic. Novotny shot 4-for-6 from the field and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

LSSU could not find their shot from the outside, hitting just 4-of-21 shots from distance, while the Chargers shot 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from behind the arc and outscored the Lakers in bench scoring 44-30.

Junior guard Mackenzie Edwards scored 11 points, hauled in five rebounds and dished out four assists for the Lakers.

Freshman guard Courtney Jacobsen played 17 minutes off the bench and scored a career-high 10 points.

Hillsdale's Makenna Ott led all scorers with 17 points in 18 minutes of reserve action. Ott shot 6-for-11 from the field and hit 3-of-4 shots from three.

Madison Berry scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead the Chargers' starters in scoring.

The Lakers return home next week to host Grand Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and face Ferris State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
