Lakers hit several season highs during victory over Bulldogs

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State shot an impressive 50 percent from the field during the second half to protect a slim halftime lead and went on to beat Ferris State 62-51 during Saturday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

LSSU (4-14 overall, 3-9 GLIAC), which snapped a six-game losing streak, overturned a two-point first-quarter deficit to lead 29-25 at halftime. Freshman guard Courtney Jacobsen scored eight second-quarter points to help the Lakers overtake Ferris State (3-15 overall, 3-9 GLIAC).

Lake Superior State out-scored the Bulldogs 15-2 during a 4:43 span in the third period to build a 44-29 lead. LSSU's run included back-to-back three-pointers by Jacobson and junior guard Mackenzie Edwards.

Edwards, who averages 12.4 points per game, scored six of her game-leading 19 points during that stretch. She is averaging 20.0 ppg halfway through the Lakers' current homestand.

Ferris State trimmed the lead to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but LSSU maintained a double-figure lead during the final 3:32.

LSSU freshman center Rachel Novotny recorded her first collegiate double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four blocked shots. Jacobsen finished with a season-high 14 points, which is her second double-figure performance in three games, and sophomore forward Natalie Peterson added a season-high-tying 10 rebounds.

LSSU shot 43.8 percent from the field for the game, making 9-of-16 three-point attempts. The Lakers were 11-of-15 at the free-throw line and led the boards, 38-36. They shot a season-high 56.3 percent from behind the arc.

Ferris State, coached by former LSSU guard Kendra (Harris) Faustin '01, was led by Rachel McInerney with 18 points and nine rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 32.3 percent from the field, including 5-of-20 from three-point range, and made 4-of-5 free throws. Faustin is in her first season at FSU after spending eight years at Niagara.

LSSU plays host to Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
