Men's tennis drops pair against NAIA opponents over the weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Lake Superior State men's tennis suffered a pair of dual match losses against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) opponents over the weekend spent in Grand Rapids. The Lakers (0-2) fell 8-1 on Saturday (Oct.1) against Aquinas and 6-3 against Davenport on Sunday.

During Saturday's 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Saints, freshman Joseph Gilman recorded the Lakers' only victory with his first collegiate win. Gilman defeated Chase Peery 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles slot.

Juniors Jake Prime and Ieuan Lister each battled through tight three-set singles matches before eventually falling. Prime won 6-4 in his first set against Gunnar Peery in No. 1 singles, but Peery stormed back to win 6-1, 11-9 to claim the point. Lister also won his first set 6-4 over Kilian Salgado-Pasantes before surrendering 6-4, 10-7.

On Sunday, against Davenport, the Lakers again came up scoreless in doubles play but split the singles portion in the 6-3 loss against the Panthers (2-0). 

Sophomore Luis Valderrama won 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 over Sam Rogerson for his first singles victory of the season. Freshman Peter Summers also picked up his first collegiate victory in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 over Max Hartman, and Gilman moved to 2-0 to start the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over JP van Antwerpen.

The LSSU men's tennis spring season opens Feb. 18, 2017 with a match at Lawrence Tech.
