Men's Tennis Downs Purdue Northwest on Senior Day

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's tennis team hosted Purdue Northwest in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference tilt Sunday afternoon with the Lakers taking down the Pride, 8-1, on senior day inside the Arbuckle Student Activity Center.

Lake State improves to a 7-7 overall with the win and own a 2-4 mark in league action. PNW falls to 7-8, 1-4.

In the doubles portion, the Lakers started off with a commanding 3-0 lead. No. 1 double Ieuan Lister and Diego Penz won a close match (9-7). At No. 2 doubles, Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama continued their three match win streak with a score of (8-5). At No. 3 doubles, Joe Gilman and Peter Summers won (8-4).

Lake State continued their momentum into singles play, where they took five-of-six. At No. 1 singles Gilman won (6-1, 6-2). At No. 2 singles, Prime won his match (6-4, 6-2). At No. 3 singles, Valderrama had his second three set match this weekend, he lost (4-6, 6-1, 6-2).

Prime, who continues an outstanding senior season added to his team-leading record in singles play improving to 9-4. Prime and his doubles partner, Valderrama, own a team-best record of 10-4 on the season.

Lister, Penz, and Summers all had commanding straight set wins. At No. 4 singles, Lister won (6-2, 6-0), Penz at No. 5 singles won (6-3, 6-0), and rounding out the lineup at No. 6 singles was Summers, he won (6-2, 6-0).

Lake Superior looks to solidify a playoff spot when they visit Tiffin University and Wayne State University next weekend. With a win over Tiffin, the Lakers would clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
