SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the No. 24 Michigan Tech Huskies by a final score of 92-51 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the SDC Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. With the loss, the Lakers overall record sits at 2-5 while the team's conference record is 1-2 after the first three games of GLIAC competition.  

After the Huskies jumped out to an early 8-2 lead over the Lakers in the opening two minutes of play, the Lakers responded after a smart timeout was taken by head coach Brandon Lokken. On the first possession back, Margot Woughter made a three-point jumper and with 5:35 left in the first quarter, Woughter made her second three of the game to tie at 11. 

The Lakers grabbed the lead for the first time in the game at 4:24 of the opening quarter after Mattison Rayman and Woughter combined for back-to-back field goals to give the team a 15-14 lead over the Huskies. However, Michigan Tech answered with a run of nine straight points to regain the lead (23-15). Makenzie Bray closed out the high-scoring first quarter with a three-point jump shot to make it a 23-18 score following the first 10 minutes of play. 

In the second quarter, the Huskies began to extend their lead over the Lakers as the home team outscored the visitors by a 20-11 margin. Senior Ella Bontrager made a three-pointer for the Lakers with 4:27 left in the half to pull the Lakers within eight points (33-25) of their conference rival. Michigan Tech would close out the half strong, taking a 14 point lead into the second half (43-29). 

In the second half, the Huskies dominated play as the team outscored the Lakers by a margin of 49-22. The Lakers were unable to come up with an answer for Michigan Tech's offense in the second half and the Huskies took the game by a final score of 92-51. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Rayman led the Lakers in the game with 16 points as she went 6-for-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Rayman ranked second on the team in rebounds with five in the game while also adding two assists and a block. Woughter ranked second on the team in points with 14 as she scored five field goals, including a pair of three-pointers. Bray rounded out the team's double-digit point scorers in the game as she totaled 10 points while also recording a team-high six rebounds. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 34.5 shooting percentage, going 19-for-55 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Huskies went 35-for-69 in the game to total a 50.7 shooting percentage. Michigan Tech outrebounded Lake State, 43-27, in the game.
