Laker Hockey Take Down the Seawolves 5-1

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (1-2-0) earned a dominant 5-1 victory over the visiting Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage (1-2-0) in the Lakers' home-opener as part of Great Lake State Weekend on Friday.

The Seawolves would strike first midway through the opening period as Maximilion Helgeson took advantage of a man advantage on the power-play, but the Lakers responded at the 10:24 mark after a replay review determined that Cole Craft (North Bay, Ont.) scored his first goal of the season off of assists from Bryan Huggins (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Cam Kungle (Green Bay, Wis.).

At the 5:58 mark of the second period, Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) slotted home what would eventually turn out to be the game-winner after converting on the one-timer after taking the feed from Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.), and defenseman Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) also notched an assist on the play. Then, at the 13:22 mark, Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) was able to steal the puck away from the Seawolves before finding sophomore Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) who found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Lakers wasted no time extending their lead in the final period of action with Tyler Williams (South Lyon, Mich.) firing the puck past Joey Lamoreaux 27 seconds into the period for his second goal of the season with assists from captain Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany). Batchelder would then tack one more on for the home team after cleaning up a rebound from Westcott after Huggins played it ahead for the first goal of his career, icing away the Lakers' first win of the season by a final score of 5-1.

Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) stopped 32 of 33 shots that he faced to earn his first win of the season between the pipes, and freshman William Hakansson (Oskarshamn, Sweden) earned two saves in just under five minutes of action in relief in his collegiate debut.

The Lakers will be looking for the series sweep on Saturday, Oct. 14 with the first puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
