Laker Men's Tennis Fall to No. 14 Warriors Despite Several Highly-Competitive Matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's tennis program (6-6, 1-3 GLIAC) fell to the No. 14 Wayne State Warriors (12-9, 2-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 4-0 despite multiple strong performances on Friday.

The Warriors got off to a strong start in doubles play after coming away with two key games after Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) and Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain) tied the match at 4-4 in the No. 2 doubles match, but the duo of Xavier Vicent Navarro (Cocentaina, Spain) and Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain) secured a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot to knot up the doubles matches at 1-1. The pairing of Aaron Osmond (Cheltenham, U.K.) and Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Quebec) would then give the No. 3 ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II, Wayne State's Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey, all they could handle, going back and forth for the entirety of the match, and Hamon would hit on two massive serves to fend off a pair of match points to force a tiebreaker. However, the Warriors would ultimately take the hard-fought battle in a 9-7 tiebreaker.

Drenth, the No. 24 ranked singles player in the nation, would open singles play with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Osmond despite a strong battle in the second set. The Warriors would then claim a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot, and despite a valiant effort from Limongi in which he forced a tiebreaker in the first set before pushing his opponent to the brink in the second, Wayne State ultimately clinched the match with a 7-6, 7-5 win in the No. 2 singles match.

With the match decided, the remaining singles matches would go unfinished. However, Fraile had won his first set by a score of 6-4 prior to his match being pulled from the court.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, April 14 when they host the Ferris State Bulldogs with the first serve scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
