BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball program fell in three sets at No. 4 Ferris State on Saturday.
Both teams battled early in the match with the Lakers getting a kill from
Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.), but the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead. Despite a pair of kills from
Avery Headworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) Ferris State managed to claim the opening set by a margin of 25-14.
The Bulldogs pushed ahead for a 10-4 lead in the second set, but LSSU kept fighting with kills from
Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia). The Lakers continued to try and rally with multiple kills from Varnakova, but it would not be enough as Ferris State held on to take the second set 25-18.
A pair of service aces from
Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) helped her team to an early 5-2 lead in the third set, but the Bulldogs responded with a 9-2 run of their own to take the lead. The Lakers would then rally with a 5-0 run behind kills from Waters and
Rachel Steele (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) to trim the lead back down to two. However, despite kills from Varnakova and
Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.), Ferris State was able to close out the set and the match by respective scores of 25-20 and 3-0.
The Lakers will now turn their attention to the annual Midwest Regional Crossover on Friday, Oct. 18 with matchups to be determined early in the week leading up to the event.
