SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (0-3-0) fell to the Stonehill Skyhawks (2-2-0) by a final score of 4-1 in the first ever meeting between the two programs on Friday.
Both teams battled throughout the opening period, but the score remained 0-0 after 20 minutes of action.Â
Zach Nicholas was able to break the scoreless drought 3:28 into the second period, and Anthony Galante extended Stonehill's lead to 2-0 midway through the stanza.Â
Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) was able to breathe some life into the Lakers in the third, building momentum and cutting the deficit in half after deflecting in a shot from John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) on the power play. Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) would also pick up an assist on the play. However, Cameron Gaudette pushed the Skyhawk lead back to two goals midway through the period, and an empty-netter from Galante iced the game away.
Despite the loss, the Lakers outshot the Skyhawks 30-23.Â
LSSU will look to bounce back in game two on Saturday, Oct. 19 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
