SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (1-3-0) closed out Great Lake State Weekend with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks (2-3-0) on Saturday, marking the first career shutout for Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.).
William Ahlrik (Tidaholm, Sweden) got the Lakers on the board five minutes into the game, pushing the puck through during a scrum around the net with some help from Jordan Venegoni (Livonia, Mich.) and Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.).Â
At the 12:05 mark of the second period, Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.) doubled up the score 20 seconds into a power play opportunity after being set up by Johnny Druskins (Plymouth, Mich.) and Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.).
Both teams would then face a significant delay after a pane of glass in Taffy Abel Arena shattered, but the Lakers would not even let that slow them down as Ahlrik picked up his second of the night only a few minutes after players returned to the ice. Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and Venegoni also picked up assists on the play.
Both teams would battle throughout a scoreless third period, but Applebee stood tall between the pipes for 19 more saves to preserve the first shutout of his collegiate career.
The Lakers will now enter a bye week before traveling to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, Nov. 1 with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
