COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Lake Superior State hockey program (1-4-0) fell to the No. 15 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0-1) by a final score of 9-3 on Friday.
Gunnarwolfe Fontaine put the Buckeyes on the board 23 seconds into the contest, and James Hong doubled up the score four minutes later. Joe Dunlap and Caden Brown would then put Ohio State ahead 4-0 after the opening period.Â
At the 6:30 mark of the second period, Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) broke the scoring drought for the Lakers, directing in a shot from Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) while Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) also picked up an assist on the play. Then, at the 17:49 mark, Piku scored on the power play to cut the deficit to two with some help from Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) and Milburn.Â
The Lakers continued to chip away at the lead as Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.) found the back of the net 24 seconds into the third period to put LSSU back within one with assists from Blake Humphrey (Rochester, N.Y.) and Bushy. However, Ohio State managed to respond with five unanswered tallies to close out the game.
The Lakers will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday, Nov. 2 with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m.
