UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball program (7-15, 2-9 GLIAC) fell to the Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) Cardinals (5-17, 2-9 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-0 on Thursday.
Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia) got things started with a kill, and Rachel Steele (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) helped put her team up 5-3. However, despite a pair of kills from Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.), the Cardinals were able to pull out ahead with runs of 7-1 and 6-2 to take the opening set 25-16.
SVSU got off to the early lead in the second set, but the Lakers kept fighting with kills from Deming and an ace from Avery Headworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.). However, despite a kill from Giselle Wiitanen (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), the Cardinals were able to close out the set 25-15.
Both teams battled in the third set with the Lakers notching a pair of kills from Steele. However, SVSU managed to settle in and close out the set and the match with an 8-1 run.
Deming led the LSSU offense with 7 kills while hitting at a rate of .429, and Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) led all players with 14 digs.
LSSU will now turn their attention to a matchup against the Roosevelt Lakers on Saturday, Nov. 2 with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
