SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (0-2) fell to the No. 4 Michigan State Spartans (2-0) by a final score of 5-1 on Saturday.

Both defenses opened the game with a strong showing, holding one another scoreless throughout the first 20 minutes of action. However, Isaac Howard would break the scoreless drought by putting MSU on the board first 25 seconds into the second period, and Daniel Russell doubled up the score less than a minute later. Then, at the 7:54 mark, Howard was able to score his second of the game to make it 3-0 in favor of the Spartans.

The Lakers would get on the board in the third period as William Ahlrik (Tidaholm, Sweden) backhanded in his first goal of his college career after receiving a pass from Branden Piku (Harrison Twp., Mich.) from behind the net. However, Joey Larson responded, and MSU would ultimately walk away with the 5-1 victory after tacking on an empty netter.

Despite the loss, LSSU senior goaltender Easton Hesse (Beaumont, Alta.) stood his ground, stopping 42 shots on the night.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to an exhibition matchup against the USNTDP U-18 squad in Plymouth, Mich. on Friday, Oct. 11 with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
