SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (7-19, 2-13 GLIAC) fell to the Northern Michigan Wildcats (18-8, 12-4 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-0 on Friday.
The Lakers got out to an early 3-1 lead as Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.) combined for a block. Both teams would then go back and forth on their way to a 9-9 stalemate with LSSU getting multiple kills from Gia Waters (Minneapolis, Minn.). However, despite kills from Deming and Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.), the Wildcats were able to pull ahead to claim the opening set.
NMU took the early advantage in the second set, but the Lakers kept fighting with an ace from Avery Headworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and a pair of kills from Berisoff. LSSU would then find their rhythm with a 6-0 run to take the lead that featured three kills from Velasque. However, the Wildcats battled back with a run of their own, pushing ahead to take the second set 25-20.Â
The Wildcats were able to pull ahead early in the third set despite a pair of kills from Olivia Boutorwick (Macomb, Mich.), and despite multiple kills from Deming, NMU was ultimately able to close out the set and the match. Â
The Lakers will now turn their attention to their final match of the season when they take on the Michigan Tech Huskies with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
