CANTON, Ohio - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (0-4) fell on the road to the Malone Pioneers (4-0) by a final score of 62-54 on Friday.
Both teams battled early with the Lakers using a Taylor Stacy (Toledo, Ohio) three ball and a pair of jumpers from Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.), but despite a good layup inside by Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.), the Pioneers were able to pull ahead to lead 19-12 after the opening quarter.Â
Gracey Metz (Hartland, Mich.) was able to hit from beyond the arc in the second quarter, but Malone managed to build upon their lead going into halftime.Â
The Lakers would find some momentum in the second half with CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) stealing the ball away and getting to the rim on the fast break and another three from Metz. Then, in the fourth quarter, the Lakers pushed back with an 8-1 run. Bradford followed that up with six straight points of her own before Golden scored six points of her own to cap off a 12-0 LSSU run to get the Lakers back within single digits. However, the Pioneers were ultimately able to hold off the furious Laker attack and close out the game at the free throw line.
Despite the loss, Golden led all players in scoring with 16 points. Meanwhile, Bradford posted a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double while also dishing out 5 assists, and Metz joined her teammates in double figures with 12 points of her own.
The Lakers return to action when they travel to take on the Tiffin Dragons on Thursday, Nov. 21 with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
