BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (3-1) bounced back with a gritty 76-69 victory over the Northwood Timberwolves (0-2) on Saturday.
The Timberwolves got off to a quick start to go ahead 7-0 early, but the Lakers were able to halt the run with a pair of baskets inside from Peter Nwoke (Lagos, Nigeria). Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) would then each hit a three to help propel the Lakers on an 11-2 run to take the lead. Both teams kept battling throughout the first half with Northwood drawing back to within one, but the Lakers let it fly with threes from Edmondson, Nino Carter-Smith (Warren, Mich.), and Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) to pull ahead 40-30 going into the halftime break.Â
Edmondson came out hot to start the second half, hitting two more three balls to put his team ahead by 17 points, their largest lead of the day. The Timberwolves tried to grind their way back into the game, but Edmondson and Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) were there with the answer to halt them in their tracks to help LSSU hold on for the 76-69 victory.
Edmondson led the way for the Lakers with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Meanwhile, Soper also finished the day in double figures with 16 points of his own, and Carter-Smith did a little bit of everything with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and a block.Â
The Lakers will now turn their attention to their home-opener against the UIndy Greyhounds on Friday, Nov. 15 with tipoff scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
