Laker Hockey Scores Four Unanswered to Beat the Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (9-11-1, 7-6-0 CCHA) scored four unanswered goals to come back from down 2-0 to defeat the Michigan Tech Huskies (11-8-2, 7-4-2 CCHA) by a final score of 4-2 on Friday.

Both teams felt each other out early with neither able to find the back of the net after the first 20 minutes of action. However, the floodgates would soon open in the second period.

Shortly after coming out of the intermission, Chase Pietila opened up the scoring to put the Huskies on the board. Then, Matthew Campbell doubled up the score at the 6:12 mark of the period. However, Michigan Tech's momentum would be short-lived as Bryan Huggins (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fired in the first goal of his career 40 seconds later, and less than a minute after that, Reagan Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) tied up the game at 2-2 with Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) and Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) picking up assists on both goals.

Both teams searched for the go ahead goal with the Huskies coming close to retaking the lead had it not been for Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) swiping it away just before the puck crossed the goal line. Then, 3:22 into the third period, Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.) sped down the ice to put the Lakers in front for the first time, and he would eventually go on to ice the game away with an empty-netter to secure the victory for LSSU.

Rorke Applebee (Chateauguay, Que.) picked up his ninth win between the pipes after making 37 saves, including 17 in the third period alone.

The Lakers will be looking for the series sweep in game two on Saturday, Jan. 11 with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
