Laker Women's Basketball Face Setback at PNW

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (5-10, 2-5 GLIAC) fell by a margin of 70-60 on the road to the Pride of Purdue Northwest (PNW) (4-11, 1-6 GLIAC) on Thursday.

CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) opened up the scoring with a three 12 seconds into the game as both teams battled throughout the first quarter with neither able to gain any separation. The Pride were able to pull ahead slightly, but Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.) scored in the paint to have the Lakers within three after ten minutes of action.

Taylor Stacy (Toledo, Ohio) drew LSSU within as close as two points in the second quarter with a shot from distance. However, Purdue Northwest managed to nurse their slim advantage, leading 34-29 at the break.

The Lakers came out swinging in the second half, fighting back to take the lead with a 10-0 run as Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.) put her team ahead with a three-pointer. However, the Pride responded with a run of their own, and despite a fast break three from Golden, the Lakers found themselves trailing 49-45 going into the final frame.

Both teams traded blows to open the fourth, but despite the Lakers' strong effort, Purdue Northwest always seemed to have an answer. The Lakers kept fighting as Hacker pulled them as close as three points away. However, the Pride managed to pull ahead late to close out the contest.

Despite the loss, Golden led LSSU in scoring with 17 points while Bradford (12), Hacker (11), and Taylor Clarey (Rochester, Minn.) (10) also scored in double figures with Clarey also having a strong outing defensively with four steals and a block.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they face the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside.
