KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball program (15-3, 6-2 GLIAC) narrowly fell on the road to the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside (8-8, 5-3 GLIAC) by a final score of 66-63 on Saturday.
Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) opened up the scoring with a basket inside as both teams battled early, but the Rangers were able to pull ahead with an 11-0 scoring run midway through the opening half. The Lakers kept battling with a three from Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) and another bucket inside from Perkins, but Parkside was able to take an eight-point advantage into the break.Â
Both teams traded baskets to open the second half, but LSSU fought back with a 7-0 run to draw within three behind timely shots from Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.), but the Rangers managed to weather the storm and extend their lead back out to 13 with seven minutes to play. The Lakers continued to battle, fighting back with multiple threes from Soma to get within three. Soper would then crash the offensive glass for a tip-in to pull within one, and then, with 46 seconds to play, Perkins put his team ahead with a clutch basket in the paint. However, the Rangers were able to go back in front with an and-one opportunity with 16 seconds on the clock before icing the game away at the free throw line as Parkside escaped with their second top-10 win in three days.Â
Perkins led the Lakers in scoring with 14 points on the day with Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) not far behind with 12. Meanwhile, Soma and Soper each scored 11 points in the game with Soper also recording 7 rebounds, two steals, and a pair of blocks as well.
The Lakers will look to bounce back when they return home to host the Michigan Tech Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 23 with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
