Grace Bradford had another solid performance for Lake Superior State, but the Lakers (0-4) dropped a 59-50 result to Hillsdale on Saturday afternoon.
The senior scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead LSSU in a defensive battle. Bradford's and-one basket and free throw with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter cut the gap to 48-46. But the Chargers (3-1, 0-0 GMAC) went on a 6-0 run to rebuild the lead and secure the contest.
Both teams contested well, leaving few open looks for shooters - neither team shot 35% from the field. The Lakers were so effective contesting shots on the outside, Hillsdale only attempted five three-pointers in the entire second half, despite a close game and their own shooting prowess. The Chargers shoot just under 40% from three on the season.
While Hillsdale scored 32 of 59 points in the paint, the Chargers paid the price on the interior, too. LSSU blocked five shots, tallied seven steals and caused havoc on the defensive end of the floor. Bradford blocked two shots, while first-year forward
Seyyane Matthew had three steals.
The Lakers were very disruptive of Hillsdale's offense, yet took care of the ball as well. The Lakers committed just 11 turnovers in the game, a season-low, and Bradford led the squad with four assists.
LSSU faces Malone on Monday at 5:00 PM at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Get your tickets and see this nonconference game, the last of three contests in five days for Lake Superior State.
