Hockey: Lakers Beaten By Beavers In Bemidji

Bemidji State scored a pair of powerplay goals in the second period, bracketing a Lake Superior State strike by Carter Batchelder, as the Beavers stayed undefeated in CCHA play with a 4-1 win Friday night.

While the Lakers (3-5-1, 0-3-0 CCHA) started well, bottling up the Beavers offense in the first, they found their own scoring chances hard to come by. BSU (6-4-1, 4-0-1 CCHA) managed just six shots on target in the first period. But as the Beavers offense sprang to life with 14 shots in the second period and 17 shots in the third, the Lakers still struggled to find their own offensive flow. They managed just 11 shots for the game, a far cry from their 26 per game average.

Batchelder, from Savage, MN, always plays well in his home state. With the Lakers shorthanded, he stole a puck the Beavers bobbled and quickly went forehand-backhand to tuck the puck in, tying the game at 1-1 at 14:01 of the second period.

"I think a lot of those Minnesota guys enjoy coming home," said Laker head coach Damon Whitten. "I thought Carter was one of our top players tonight, and it was good to see him get rewarded. That was a big goal. You get some momentum back into it. It was a good individual effort by him."

But the Beavers restored their one goal lead before time expired on the penalty, as Max Namestnikov scored to put the Bemidji State up 2-1.

Adam Flamming scored the game's opener early in the second, also on the powerplay. In the third, Connor McClennon struck at even strength, and Kasper Magnussen hit a wrap-around empty netter to clinch the 4-1 scoreline.

Rorke Applebee made 33 saves in the loss. LSSU went 40-33 in the faceoff circle. William Ahlrik had another stellar night at the dot, winning 18 of 27 draws.

Whitten said, "He was tremendous to start the game, too. We relied on him for a lot of big faceoffs and his minutes grew a little bit. William's been great in that realm and great in a lot of ways. He continues to do a good job at the dots."

The Lakers and the Beavers meet again on Saturday at 7:07 PM EST. Watch the game live on CCHA TV, powered by Midco Sports Plus, or listen live on 99.5 YES FM. LSSU returns home next weekend against Minnesota State. Buy your tickets online or at the Norris Center box office.
