Grace Bradford set a new career-high with 22 rebounds in Lake Superior State's 65-59 win over Walsh, moving into second place on LSSU's all-time rebounding list and powering the Lakers to the victory.
The senior passed Chris Nance ('96) and grabbed her 897th career rebound Monday afternoon, continuing her march toward Marti Wallace's ('83) school record. The giant stat line came on the heels of an 18-rebound game against Davenport, and 14 two games prior against Malone. Bradford now averages 12.1 rebounds per game for Lake Superior State, best in the GLIAC by a wide margin and sixth nationally.
The Lakers (1-7, 0-2 GLIAC) never trailed in the game, taking a 7-0 lead on layups by
Grace Bradford and
Seyyane Matthew, along with a three-pointer by
Malia Thelen. LSSU took a 13 point lead in the first quarter over Walsh (8-3, 4-0 GMAC), driving the play with excellent pressure and efficient offense.
With the game in the balance and the Lakers up two points late, the defense locked in and forced several misses by the Cavaliers. Free throws by
Clare Conzelmann,
Chloe Watson and
Dara Capaldi sealed the game for LSSU, but it was the defensive intensity that secured the win.
The Cavaliers were held to just 29% from the floor in the fourth quarter and 34% for the game. The Lakers contested the three well, too. Walsh shot under 25% from deep, while Lake State shot around 38% from the range. And the Lakers went to the line 33 times in a tough game.
In front of a packed crowd on Field Trip Day, the Lakers played a rugged, intense game against a quality non-conference foe. Their grit and determination saw out a quality result over a tough test to open the final week before holiday break.
The Lakers play two more games against foes outside the GLIAC this season. Thursday, LSSU travels to Illinois-Springfield. Then the Lakers face Upper Iowa on Saturday.Â
